Mycoremediation & Mycorestoration with Dr. Lauren Czaplicki
Dr. Lauren Czaplicki is an expert in mycoremediation and mycorestoration. She holds a Doctorate, a Master’s, and a Bachelor’s with work in environmental engineering. She’s working towards a world where fungi are leveraged in their full capacity to help humans live in harmony with their environment. In her research at Duke University, she coaxed native soil fungi to clean up legacy hydrocarbon pollution from Superfund sites. In recent years, she’s been working towards restoring the small water cycle and improving fire resilience using fungi and the ColdFire protocol. Her talk will span mycoremediation and mycorestoration and discuss how local fungi are key to everything!

Should I have Eaten that Mushroom?
The Poisonous Fungi – Rocky Mountain Region with Dr. Michael Beug
This talk will cover mushrooms of the Rocky Mountain region plus a few
exceptionally dangerous species that you may encounter when foraying in other parts of North America including mushrooms that are safe when properly prepared but problematic otherwise.
Dr. Beug completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Washington in 1971 and spent 32 years at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington where he taught chemistry, environmental studies, mycology, and
organic farming. He started mushrooming in 1968 and his photographs now have appeared in well over 80 books and articles on mushrooms. In 1974 he joined both the Pacific Northwest Key Council and the North American
Mycological Association (NAMA where he served on the Education Committee, was chair of the Toxicology Committee, chair of the Editorial Committee, and past editor of the Journal McIlvainea and is now active on the
medicinal mushroom committee). He won the 2006 NAMA Award for Contributions to Amateur Mycology. With coauthors Alan and Arleen Bessette, he wrote Ascomycete Fungi of North America: A Mushroom Reference Guide, University of Texas Press, 2014. His book, Mushrooms of Cascadia: An Illustrated Key to the Fungi of the Pacific Northwest, Second Edition, Ten Speed Press, was published in 2024. The Mushroom Hunter’s Kitchen cooking demo with Chad Hyatt

Chad has a new mushroom cookbook coming out in July and he’s going to do a cooking demo for us!
Chad Hyatt has made a name for himself in Northern California and beyond by sharing his delicious spin on wild mushroom cookery at public and private events. Both an expert forager and classically trained chef, he has cooked in a variety of restaurants and private clubs around the San Francisco Bay area, where he can often be found putting on wild mushroom themed dinners and teaching mushroom related classes.
Chad’s cooking career began after leaving an engineering career for culinary school. He has cooked in a wide range of kitchens, from Michelin-starred fine dining to opening a BBQ restaurant, and from country club to gastropub. He is passionate about approachable comfort food, based on local, seasonal ingredients, and, of course, wild mushrooms. He has been working as an independent freelance chef since the middle of 2018, with a focus on special events.
Chad dove into mushroom hunting shortly after beginning his cooking career, and quickly gained a local reputation for eating the “weird mushrooms” that nobody else collected. As his mushroom hunting knowledge improved, his kitchen skills began to open up doors to cooking and teaching at various mushroom events in California and beyond. He still has a reputation for eating all of the weird mushrooms, though these days people often pay to share the experience.
